White Light is split into the colours of the rainbow when it is refracted by a prism, a phenomenon called dispersion. It happens because the speed of light in glass depends on wavelength. The white light spectrum is an example of a continuous spectrum. The spectrum from a discharge tube is composed of narrow vertical lines, as the light source emits light only of certain wavelengths.

diffraction grating, consisting of many closely spaced parallel slits, can be used to measure the wavelength of light as,

d sin θn = nλ ; where θn = the angle of diffraction of the nth order, d = the slit spacing, and λ = the wavelength.
